Joshua Tree rock climbing with Boy Scout Troop 330

Indian Cove Campsite in Joshua Tree

Rock climbing at Joshua Tree with the Boy Scout Troop 330 from Montebello, Ca.

This past weekend, I joined my son David and his Boy Scout troops to a weekend of rock climbing at Joshua Tree. We stayed at the Indian Cove campsite, which is about 13 miles east of Joshua Tree Village.

The area is surrounded with large rock formations, so this was the perfect place for the scouts to learn rock climbing and propelling. It was 85 degrees the entire weekend, perfect desert temperature. ๐Ÿ™‚

Spring and Fall are the perfect times to visit Joshua Tree, so I’m glad the trip was scheduled in March. The area is very large, with several hiking trails so several parents like me come along with the kids. Here is a Joshua Tree Map so you can see the large area.

For those admiring my nice camera work ๐Ÿ™‚ I used a Nikon DSLR.

Current gas prices in So California

gas prices in california

Crazy gas prices…I need to ride my bike more often.

Back in December I posted how this gas station was selling regular gas for $3.29/gallon, today just over 3 months time, it’s $4.05/gallon. That’s an increase of 23% or .76 cents per gallon. At this same rate, they’ll be selling regular unleaded at over $5.00/gallon by the end of the summer. Crazy.

I don’t know about you, but these gas prices are really worrying me. I don’t mind companies making a profit, but when I hear just how much these oil companies make each quarter in profits, it makes me mad. Other than drive less or buy an electric car, there’s not much we can all do and that is sad.

Perhaps this is why I’m always looking for deals, especially here in the OC, where I live. Oh well, enough of this rant. Hope everyone is having a great Monday! Tomorrow I have a special post, by our guest photog JC.

A Ford Super Deluxe Woody at the Huntington Beachcruisers Meet 2011.

Here is another car from the HB Beachcruisers 2011 meet that took place this weekend. Yesterday I showcased the 1959 Morris Minor woody wagon, today I created a small photo gallery of the 2011 Beachcruisers meet.

This is one of my favorite car shows in Orange County, I guess it’s because it’s right on the beach. Another car show that I’ll be looking forward to in April is the Orange Plaza Car Show.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

1959 morris minor woody wagon at HB Beachcruiser meet

Huntington Beach '49 Morris Minor woody

Gentlemen inspects dent on a 1959 Morris Minor Woody wagon in Huntington Beach.

I was at the 11th Annual Huntington Beachcruiser Meet this morning. It was a cold spring morning, but no rain so that was nice. What wasn’t nice was the dent on this 1959 Morris Minor Woody wagon. This gentlemen was inspecting it, but it seems, (according to lady I spoke too) that it happened overnight. It was parked and covered, but someone must have hit it, perhaps some kids playing near the pier plaza.

Otherwise, the event was great. There were so many wagons, convertibles, VW transporters, woodies, pick-ups and other similar vehicles of the pre-1967 era.

On top of that, the Vans Pier Classic surfing competition is this weekend, so the beach was alive with activities.

***I’ve added a small gallery of photos from today’s event of the HB Beachcruiser meet.

Nature imitates freeway art in Fullerton

tree grows on freeway wall

Nature imitates freeway art.

For the past year and a half I’ve seen this tree grow out of the cement wall off the side of the 91 freeway in Fullerton. Just under the Lemon St overpass of the 91 freeway, this tree seems to imitate the carvings of palm trees created when they built up the wall.

In the past I would always say to myself, “won’t the roots damage the cement wall? Why doesn’t Caltrans or someone remove it?” But now, it’s become something for my wife and I to talk about as we wait in traffic entering the eastbound onramp of the freeway. We’ll make comments like “maybe they’ll trim the bush to match the palm trees!” ๐Ÿ™‚

So next time you pass this area, don’t forget to take a quick look at nature imitating art!
