Mystery Shack at Calico Ghost Town

The Mystery Shack – Calico Ghost Town

Most people have driven by this ghost town, usually on their way to or from Las Vegas. Heading northeast on the 15 fwy, on your left side just past Barstow, the large “Calico” letters are mounted on the desert mountainside.

This town is now a tourist attraction, but in the late 1890’s, it was a thriving silver mining town. The buildings and surroundings bring back memories of old western movies. The place is host of several events, this past weekend was no exception, it was the Just Cruisin 4 Fun Car Show.

As people were out enjoying the cars, this little boy seemed more interested in the Mystery Shack. Perhaps he was trying to figure out how the water in this tilted house can flow uphill!

Joshua Tree rock climbing with Boy Scout Troop 330

Indian Cove Campsite in Joshua Tree

Rock climbing at Joshua Tree with the Boy Scout Troop 330 from Montebello, Ca.

This past weekend, I joined my son David and his Boy Scout troops to a weekend of rock climbing at Joshua Tree. We stayed at the Indian Cove campsite, which is about 13 miles east of Joshua Tree Village.

The area is surrounded with large rock formations, so this was the perfect place for the scouts to learn rock climbing and propelling. It was 85 degrees the entire weekend, perfect desert temperature. 🙂

Spring and Fall are the perfect times to visit Joshua Tree, so I’m glad the trip was scheduled in March. The area is very large, with several hiking trails so several parents like me come along with the kids. Here is a Joshua Tree Map so you can see the large area.

For those admiring my nice camera work 🙂 I used a Nikon DSLR.

Sledding in Big Bear

According to ABC’s Channel 7 Live Mega Doppler 7000 HD Super Duper Spectacular Mega Monster weather forecast (sorry, one has to laugh at the name they give it), the current storm in southern California will bring snow to the local mountains including Big Bear.

Grilling hot dogs in the snow at Big Bear

Have you ever grilled hot dogs in the snow? We did! Big Bear is a perfect place to visit one of their parks and fire up the grill. Don’t forget to bring your burgers and a sled too! 😉

Big Bear and the other local mountains in southern California are perfect places to play in the snow. Plan ahead and spend a day shopping, snowboarding and barbecuing.

Pine trees at Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake Pine Trees

Have you ever walked up close to the pine trees in Big Bear Lake? I did! 🙂

It’s beautiful this time of year, recent snow, clean air, and of course tall pine trees! If you get a chance leave the smog in LA and take a drive up and see for yourself. However, be sure to check the weather conditions first!
