Baby Gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Baby gorilla stands up to a bigger gorilla

Even gorilla’s know you must stand up to a bully!

This little gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park was having a fun time playing around it’s enclosure when his older brother came by and started to play a little rough with him. I captured this great moment when the little guy stood his ground and lifted up his fist. It was pretty cool.

My wife and I have year passes to both the Safari Park and the Zoo in San Diego and try to visit as often as we can, although it is a drive for us, but definitely worth it.

And for those who are interested in the camera I used to capture this photo, I was using a Nikon D7100.

Sable Antelope at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Sable Antelope at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

I photographed this Sable Antelope backlit by the early morning sun at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It was looking at me as if to say, “take the picture already, I’m getting tired posing for you!”.

While trying to figure out what type of animal this was prior to posting, sadly I found out that the Sable Antelope is widely hunted for sport in Africa. I figure hunting in order to consume it for food is widely accepted and is ok, but to kill it as a sport is almost like shooting a hummingbird with a BB gun just for fun. Doesn’t make much sense.

But back to the photo itself, the Antelope was very backlight making the animal underexposed. It looked nice, but I brightened up the animal just a bit in post editing using PS. The brighter tone allowed the face and texture to show.

For those photography buffs, the camera settings were: Focal length at 200mm, f/3.2, 1/640 sec, ISO-100 and it was taken at 6:34 AM. I used a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon 80-200mm AF-D 2.8 lens. But I must admit, the original image was not that great, I had to adjust the contrast and remove a little pile of Antelope dung in the foreground!

Baby Elephant at Roar and Snore in San Diego Safari Park

I captured this image of a four day old baby elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. My wife and I were at the Roar and Snore camping adventure that allows you to spend the night in tents inside the park. For more on that program I wrote up a full review of the Roar and Snore experience.

The good thing is that is also includes two full day passes (day before and after camping). So we were able to roam the park at our own pace and take lots of photos. The baby elephant was very popular, but he/she was not always visible. We lucked out on our first visit, he was very close to the viewing area.

Later at night the baby elephant was too far away and hiding behind it’s mother, so our day visit was worth the trip. If you visit the elephant enclosure look for the large square cutouts on the fence, this allows you to photograph them without having the fence blur your pictures. That’s how I took the photo above.

One of the other highlights of the trip included the lions, I was able to capture them roaring in the early morning. About 6:30 am, we walked over to the area and I captured the video below.
