Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve – Hidden Gem of OC

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve – hidden gem of OC. Most people drive by it as they travel north on Pacific Coast Highway, PCH, going from the Huntington Beach Pier to Seal Beach. Although it’s a large area, most will miss the small turnout that leads to an even smaller parking lot.

The PCH entrance is one of two parking lots and the one nearest the famous wooden bridge. Parking is free. Here is the Google Maps link for easy reference. From there, make your way to the bridge that crosses over the wetlands.

Spring or fall in the early mornings at best and prepare to be awed by the number of birds and other wildlife. The area is very large, with many birds and land creatures. Be on the lookout for rattle snakes too!

Take an evening walk during sunset and sit on one of the many benches aligning the walkway facing the wetlands. With PCH and Bolsa Chica State Beach in the background, its literally like viewing a painting.

There is so much to do and see at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, its a true gem of OC. From hiking, running, to photographing wild life. I took the photo of the bird above from the beautiful bridge that spans the wetlands. It allows you to view and get close to the wildlife, without disturbing their natural habitat.

It’s also a great place to take photos of people. Below is a photo I took during a photoshoot at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands wooden bridge. Click on the link to see more of that shoot.

Also, please note, drones are not permitted to fly over the Bolsa Chica Reserve wetlands. So leave your drones at home!
